3D Dentistry

Serving patients for over three decades, Turner Family Dentistry of Virginia in Painter, VA is a trusted name for state-of-the-art, innovative dental services. As part of our commitment to providing our patients with advanced care and treatments, Dr. William H. Turner II incorporates a range of 3D dentistry services into our practice including CEREC, Cone Beam CT imaging, guided implant placement, and sleep apnea appliances.

What is CEREC®?

CEREC® stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic, and this system is known most notably for its ability to create single-visit, custom-fitted porcelain crowns and veneers. Our practice utilizes this system to produce same-day crowns to restore damaged teeth quickly, efficiently, and effectively. CEREC® crowns can also be paired with dental implants to restore your smile.

In order to qualify for this procedure, you must have sufficient bone structure to support the implant screw. The process may take up to six months to complete, as the screw must properly bond with the jaw bone.

How does the CEREC® restoration process work?

This system is dual-purposed: it uses both computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to create crowns and dental restorations. To prepare your tooth for the restoration, we will remove all decay and then make a digital impression of the tooth using the CEREC® camera. The CAD software in this system allows Dr. Turner and our team to examine your teeth from every angle.

The impression of your teeth is then used to design your custom ceramic restoration. First we add the custom specifications into the system computer; then we add a ceramic block into the milling unit. The block chosen will resemble your existing tooth color to ensure your crown looks natural. Within 15 minutes, the restoration is complete and is ready to be fixed in your mouth.

What are the benefits of CEREC® Crowns?

There are many benefits to receiving a CEREC®-produced crown, the most important being it saves you time and discomfort. For traditional crowns, the restoration process is completed over the course of multiple visits, as your tooth impressions would have to be sent back and forth to a dental laboratory to produce your new crown.

With the CEREC® system, we are able to produce one visit crowns. Even better, because the impressions are created digitally, you do not have to sit through the uncomfortable (and horrible-tasting) experience of creating physical impressions of your teeth.

Additional benefits of the CEREC® system:
  • CEREC® restorations are made from high-quality ceramic products.
  • You do not have to receive a temporary restoration.
  • It produces a cost-effective, long-lasting restoration.
  • Restorations are made of compressed porcelain, which enhances strength and durability.
  • More of your natural tooth is saved.
  • Your dentist produces and places the restoration in-house.
  • No more time-consuming transfers to and from the lab to produce your crowns.

Cone-Beam CT System & Sleep Apnea Treatments

This type of x-ray machine is used to generate 3D images of the soft tissues, dental structures, nerve paths, and facial bones. We utilize this technology to diagnose oral disease, analyze and locate the root canal systems of teeth, complete airway analysis, and treat sleep apnea with oral appliances.

Cone-beam CT scans are particularly effective in helping us design precision implant guides. Compared to traditional dental implant systems, guided implant surgeries ensure exact placement of the implant, which reduces the time needed for the surgery and creates a more aesthetic result. Think of these implant guides like a GPS: they allow us to put the implant exactly where it should go, with ease and accuracy.

OPTISLEEP

Custom oral appliances are often prescribed by dentists to treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or snoring. It is also appropriate for patients who are unable to or do not want to do CPAP therapy. OPTISLEEP systems consist of a two-piece appliance which works to keep the upper airway open, which prevents apneas. The appliances move the lower jaw forward to relax the tissue at the back of the throat and prevent the base of the tongue from blocking the airway.

OPTISLEEP oral appliances are custom-designed for each patient and comfortable to wear. It is designed to allow you to naturally open and close your mouth, while still keeping your jaw properly aligned while you sleep.
